Thank heaven for little fangirls

1) When I heard about Gloria Steinem's death I thought of this Epstein related essay, which I read on the same day.

"This was a group of men whose ideas of what made women and girls valuable, whose sense of where they belonged and where they didn’t, whose comfort with women and girls only in the context of a power distance so extreme as to be cruel — whose ideas about these things were not altogether unrelated to their other ideas.

These are men who do not like resistance. Friction. Pushback. Any obstacle to the sprawl of their ideas and needs. The most extreme manifestation of this tendency is the pedophilia at the heart of the story, in which Epstein and some of the men around him participated. There can be no more acute expression of the desire simply to act on the world without countervailing force than child rape. But as with so many behavioral habits revealed by the Epstein files, this allergy to pushback lies on a spectrum, and the same basic avoidance of friction can be found in men not associated with sex crimes, and in rituals as innocent as dinner. A woman your own age opposite you at dinner is, evidently, for these men, hindrance in its own right."

3) Although I knew about the ugly business of Discovery shelving bunches of completed or in process TV shows and films after taking over WB, I didn't recall the particular case of Coyote vs Acme. However after reading about the awful way everyone was treated, and the fact that the movie finally found its way into theaters despite everything, I wanted to vote with my dollars that the company who rescued it did the right thing.

My partner is also a longtime Looney Tunes fan and he quite enjoyed the movie. I thought it was ok. ( Read more... )

4) We also saw Mandalorian and Grogu now that it's on Disney+. I can see why it didn't do great in the theaters, and to some degree this is also because of the split audience issue. ( Read more... )

5) I don't think I realized this about Buffy:

n 2002, in Season 7, Episode 4, "Help," Willow (Alyson Hannigan) says the line, "Have you Googled her yet?" Up until then, 'Google' had never been used as a verb on TV. It was an entirely new phenomenon that demonstrates the show's place in the early 21st century.

Modern viewers might hear that line and think nothing of it...But back in 2002, when the digital age was still developing, this was huge. It not only demonstrated the emergence of technology like search engines, but also showed how, through shows like Buffy, the modern world was being crafted. Nowadays, words like 'iPhone' and 'apps' are common staples in our vocabulary, but in the early 2000s, they would have been meaningless. Buffy's inclusion of the verb 'Google' shows how the series not only impacted pop culture, but was impacted by society adapting to a new era."
