Thanks to a prompt from the lovely dreamlittleyo, I have a full Bill & Ted mermaid fic written in rough. There are a lot of holes still to be filled in -- that's what she said -- but the epic tale of shipwreck and cross-species love is there. Here, have a snippet:

Ted squints up at the sun, then sweeps his gaze up and down the beach, just trying to take in the world at large and make sure everything else remains normal. Then he looks back at Bill. "Am I freaking out? Is that what's happening here?"

"I think you're doing pretty well, dude, all things considered."

Ted takes a short breath, then another. "Am I hallucinating you?"

Bill looks like he's giving it some serious thought. "I don't think so, Ted. But then, if I was your hallucination, that's probably what I would say."

"Quite a predicament," Ted says, then shrugs because there's very little he can do about it either way. "It's still nice to have someone to talk to."

"Totally," Bill agrees. "I haven't talked to anyone but Rufus in days and days."

"Rufus?"

Bill points at the seagull, who has given up on lunch and is perched on a nearby rock, preening his feathers and watching them closely.

"Rufus, huh?" Ted says, addressing the bird.

Rufus squawks twice, bobs his head, and shits profusely on his rock.

"Pleasure is all mine, dude," Ted says dryly.

Marla was magnificent, nameless narrator was a messed up little barrel of monkeys, and it was so nice seeing Tyler inching his way back in.

Ted Lasso: Burning Bridges by dreamlittleyo - Ted/Jamie, mature. After the final game of the season, Jamie has a lot of confusing feelings about the note from his former coach. Maybe confronting Ted will help, if only Jamie can figure out what the hell he wants to say. But, oh, Jamie, what terrible decisions you make. This was Jamie with all his shields up and Ted being so incredibly TED about it all. Did not know I needed this pairing but now I'm very much on board.

Frankenstein (2025): two souls in Eden by blackeyedblonde - Creature/Elizabeth, explicit. After sustaining a shallow bullet wound at the hands of Victor’s wrath, Elizabeth willingly goes into the Creature’s arms and leaves her entire life behind in a single night. Oh, this was so lovely and so incredibly intimate.

The Pitt: ignorant piece of shit by somethingdifferent - Victoria Javadi/James Ogilvie, teen. On his first day at PTMC, he’d identified Victoria right away as his biggest obstacle. ... He’s always been drawn to things that want nothing to do with him. I love his contradictions and all the hoops he makes himself jump through, realised and unrealised.

The Pitt: How the Light Gets In by what_alchemy - Robby/Whitaker, explicit. After crashing his car in a blizzard, Robby wakes up in the care of Dennis Whitaker, the closet thing to a doctor in Amish country. Well, that was adorable. I loved the goodness and the awfulness of their town, the hero worship but Dennis very much being his own man, and Robby's good nature and realisations.

The Pitt: Out of No Man's Land by what_alchemy - Robby/Abbot, teen. "Whatever this was, it wasn’t an emergency." - Michael Robinavitch, having a medical emergency. This was the most adorable, heartfelt thing. I loved the glimpses of all the staff, perfectly them, and out-of-it Robbie was a joy to behold. Loved it.

Stargate Atlantis: Intersections by Kaneko - McKay/Sheppard, explicit. Rodney's Antarctica is a lot like Siberia in that it's full of scientists who work 16-hour days and bathe once a week (twice when they're feeling social), and who would slit your throat for a fresh banana. Also, you can't go for a walk without a survival kit, but that's fine - Rodney's never really been an outdoorsy person. Absolutely delightful.

Stargate Atlantis: Benched by Speranza - McKay/Sheppard, explicit. "I've learned so much from you." Where there are rescues and suffering and awwwwww, boys. This was lovely.

Avengers: daddy, watch your little black sheep run by paperclipbitch - Tony Stark/Hope Van Dyne, teen. “Just so we’re clear,” Hope says, breathless, hands tangled in Tony’s hair and eyes bright, “we’re only doing this to piss off my dad, okay?” omg what an amazing thing. I had no idea the world needed this, and how very wrong I was. I love how they were solid friends but eventually had to grow up but you could really feel them growing and learning and still being scamps at heart. THOROUGHLY enjoyed this.

Avengers: the detour by days4daisy - Thor/Rocket, explicit. A bounty comes across the channels. Return one missing prince of Asgard, make a buttload of units. Just another day for Rocket and Groot. So this author made me fall down a rabbithole of Thor/Rocket fic, which is so very wrong but also... not? I was left thinking quite a lot: How? Just... how? This was so perfectly them. How? HOW? So cute, so on point, AUGH. DAMN YOU.

Avengers: time is the ocean, or a grain of sand by days4daisy - Thor/Rocket, mature. Every morning, Rocket finds himself looking for Thor. Oh noooooo, the pain, the suffering, the sliver of hope. Poor bloody Thor. Amazing way to do an outsider POV. Ugh. Loved this.

Deadpool/Spiderman: wasn't looking for this series by cherryvanilla - Wade/Peter, explicit. When the Avengers had briefed him on Deadpool, they played up the Kills People for Money and Has No Real Morals angle and left out the Is Pretty Damn Funny and Charming in a Weird, Terrifying Sort of Way part. Oh so perfectly them. I loved this, the ridic and the moments of brevity. Lovely.

Predator: Badlands: Assistance Rendered by Glitterthorn - Dek/Thia, explicit. It’s in her programming, is the thing; written in Thia’s very core is the directive to learn about every creature she meets, to know each one down to its bones and beyond, to unpick the delicate relational web inside which they exist. I LOVE THEM. Thia is so fabulously WEIRD and Dek is such a dumb juvenile badass and they are perfect for each other. I couldn't imagine this any more perfectly than how the author wrote it.

True Detective: What We've Got by blackeyedblonde - Marty/Rust, explicit. The first night Marty gets Rust home and put to bed he whimpers like an old hound dog in his sleep, making these ripped-raw noises that well and gurgle up past his lips like fresh blood from the hole in his gut all over again. I had this fic open on my phone and dipped into it when I was out and about and killing time over the space of a couple of months (it's 280k). Each time I was transported away to this vivid world where I could see, smell and experience this beautiful, complicated relationship and their slow sailing into old age together. I thought the story was wrapped up, and then the author took me on a journey to Alaska, so I was in this winter wonderland while it was grey drizzly outside. I love how they saw each other, I love how they were so themselves but learning and loving and discovering every day together. The walls that got chipped down, the quiet little revelations, the moments of incredible softness, the badass boys they still were and would go to the wall for each other every time. Truly stunning work. I am so impressed. Five stars

Marty has been considering the possibility that after everything that has transpired between the two of them, there might just not be any potential for real awkwardness left. To be perfectly honest, Marty has never… considered Rust before, if you will. In that way. Or any way really. Uh HUH. Omggg, so somehow, like ten? years late to the party, I managed to fall face first into this fic, and it was stunning. So them, so in love, so repressed but so open, alll the feelings, just AUGH. Loved it.

True Detective: Still Beating by dancinguniverse - Marty/Rust, mature. Marty and Rust pick up the pieces. It's a slow process. So lovely.

True Detective: Lone Star by blackeyedblonde - Marty/Rust, mature. The man groans and rolls around onto his back, gritting his teeth as his head drops into the soft dirt. He closes his eyes against the sky when he answers. “I fell.” The one where Rust is a fallen star and oh my godddddd. How does someone DO that? This was so beautiful and rich, very much an x-rated Disney story with balls. I love how other Rust was, and the way Marty saw him and got over himself and learned to let himself have good things. I stayed up far too late reading.

Deadpool: Calling Heaven on a Payphone by Largishcat - Wade/Cable, Wade/Vanessa, explicit. Cable settles into the 21st century, Vanessa develops posthumous superpowers, Wade breaks into his friends’ homes. This was so perfect. I loved Cable's calm acceptance of Wade's crazy, and Wade trying to be a little less crazy to hold on to the things that were important to him.

Community: guess what we'll discover by dearygirl - Jeff/Annie, mature. Jeff gets a new roommate. So adorable. So fun. I like how the author captured them but also let them mature together and have serious moments, and then back to being ridiculous again. I really liked their vibe.

Inception: Rough Trade by Whisky - Arthur/Eames, explicit. Arthur is an investment banker. He is professional and efficient. He's a halfway decent cook. He's totally independent and has been since the age of eighteen. ... Arthur is not gay. I love how much of an asshole Arthur was, but it was hiding so much hurt and longing.

Peacemaker: grow away from me by biblionerd07 - Adrian Chase/Christopher Smith, Gut, ensemble, teen. Dorian Chase comes back to Evergreen for the first time in years and is surprised by the differences in his little brother's life. I loved Gut's perspective on things (his super duper asshole perspective) and how their crazy little gang stuck together and how Adrian has definitely found his place in the world.

James Bond (Craig movies): Old Dogs by a_good_soldier - James/Felix, explicit. Felix has sex with James Bond in various parts of Southeast Asia, and somehow they manage to fall in love about it. I love how they saw each other, and how they saw through all the usual bullshit and could just be who they were. Nice to see them surrender to it.

Frankenstein (2025): the imago by magneticwave - Victor/Elizabeth/Monster, mature. Full disclosure: I wasn't a fan of the movie. I thought it was beautiful and their science was nice, but the characters and the story left me cold. BUT THIS FIC. THIS FIC. That was unbelievably beautiful: the writing, the choices, the paths not taken. The author captured them so well, gracefully and unapologetically, and made me see how they could fit together. I loved what they did with Victor most of all, the awful man, but here he fit and had his place. Sublime. Five stars.

Very Important Question

If I had a character in a fic refer to the cartoon dancing frog... is that a reference that everyone would get?

Using it to say that another character gets to see a side of him that the rest of the world never will?

And in saying that, if the character happened to be a living-in-the-now, media-savvy vampire type in the early 2000s and he's 200-300 years old, would that make him using this reference be more believable?

I'm dithering over whether it's wildly out of character or if I think a reference from my childhood is too old, but again... see point about vampire.

(also i love that i can ask because zero people on dw are reading my dumb fic about the awful gender-biased, cursed and horribly traumatised vampires, who absolutely will not leave me alone, and i don't blame a single solitary one of you <3)

Superman (2025): mutually beneficial arrangements by teeterss - Clark/Lex, explicit. Where Lex is still evil and a bit helpless and furious about it, and Clark is so beautifully Clark, and this REALLY shouldn't have worked, but it did, just over and over and over again. I love how they came at this from such wildly different angles, and they won each other over and it just WORKED. Supe's sense of humour and goodness, and Lex's... need and desperation and the way he gets won over, hating and loving every second of it... chef's kiss. Really enjoyed this.

Superman (2025): Six of One by maplesalad - Clark/Jimmy, explicit. “No way, man, with that jaw? And the hair? And he’s, what, six-four? Women love that. And they probably like the alien thing. Women are perverts,” Jimmy said, sagely. “Maybe he has, like... tentacles.” Fun and hot. They were both very in character.

The Walking Dead: Tomorrow Is a Long Way Down by Mercy - Glenn/Daryl, mature. Glenn and Daryl and a motorcycle and an abandoned motel and some history and some futures. May contain spam and crossbows. Oh, man. This takes me allll the way back. Very them, very sweet, very stinky. Really nice job capturing Daryl.

Karate Kid: without a map by menocchio - Daniel/Johnny, explicit. He was a couple miles out of town when he saw the hitchhiker standing on the shoulder of the other lane, a dusty backpack at his feet. And Johnny was fully prepared to speed along, except when he flicked a look over in passing, it was Daniel LaRusso glancing back. The first part of this is an epic adventure of discovery, then BAM we're hit with an All Valley fight to the death but with love and more discovery. Massively enjoyed this.

Karate Kid: better with you by trill_gutterbug - Daniel/Johnny, explicit. In the spring of 1985, Johnny and Daniel discover there are better things to be than enemies. Ohhh, this is lovely. I love the crazy desire they have for each other, but they're still very them. Nice to see Daniel doing his best to be a stand up guy, and Johnny stumbling his way through his first love. I stayed up way too late reading.

Avengers: Between the Personal and the Real by arsenicarcher - Clint/Phil, explicit. Clint knows how things work between principals and their obeisants. At least, he's always thought he does. I loved their dynamic and how rubbish Clint was at self-worth. Really nicely done.

Generation Kill: shadows suspended on dust by void_fish - Brad/Ray, explicit. "How did it make you feel?" Colbert asks him. Ray smokes and smokes and never answers and ignores the half-smile on Colbert's face." Hannibal AU. I love this mutual insanity feedback loop they have going on. Brad was extra creepy in this.

Generation Kill: and that's why they call me [bad company] by postcardmystery - Brad/Ray, explicit. “I’m still smarter than you, dude,” he says to Brad, and Brad raises an eloquent eyebrow, but he doesn’t argue, because, yeah, Brad’s smart, but he’s smart enough to know what he’s not. Where Brad watches Ray burn it all down, and it's gorgeous.

Peacemaker: when you turn out the light by biblionerd07 - Harcourt & 11th Street Kids, teen. Emilia gets by with a little help from her friends. Written before the end of season 2, and may I just say: wow. It's fine. I didn't need my heart anyway. This was so very adorable.

Letterkenny: Spirit of the Code by trill_gutterbug - Wayne/Daryl, teen. Wayne breaks his leg in February. It's a whole To Do. This was lovely. I miss them. I loved Wayne's speeches. Very them.

Deadpool: Fairly Domestic by kissedtheeaves - Wade|Deadpool/Nathan|Cable, mature. “This is how the world ends,” says Wade. “Not with a bang, but a loveseat.” Ohhh, I loved this entire series. The thought of Cable mellowing enough to let himself have this and Wade also learning how to let himself have good things and be himself without needing to be full-on Deadpool 100% of the time... really lovely. Plus all their totally healthy ways of working through their issues, yep yep.

Guys. I have another fic half-written. Act 1, 2, 3, dorky human, grr vampire, revelation, make out, boom, done. That's 3 fics in about 3 days. The last 3 fics I wrote took me about 3 years. Again, I'm not saying they're good, but they're FUN.

The hardest part is I can't find definitive answers for WHY they look like bodybuilders or WHY they have no body hair or do they have their own houses or families or income and all the basic shit that gives you a backbone to work on. How do they interact with the civilian vampires? Do they have heartbeats (gonna say yes as they had Wrath hooked up to that hospital monitor)? Do they normally heal super fast or does it take days? Are they warm or cold? Do they pee? Poo? Do they all have the same powers or it varies? Is there more magic knocking around or just the vampire stuff? What do they call it when they vanish and reappear, because I bet they don't say "dematerialise" every time. Can Beth just walk in the sun or is it her giant ring giving her special powers?

I am not reading the books. This is a thing that will never happen. A-thank you. And I'm not getting into their weird sexual hang ups or stuff I'm sure is deeply important to the diehard book people. I'm just over here in the corner, doing my thing with input from no one and did I mention... FUN?

I haven't had this urge to write in so long. Happy little sigh.

(I also watched Blood and Gold yesterday just to see what else the lead guy had done, and it wasn't half bad. A German nazi movie where the nazis get theirs in a Tarantinoesque-ish style.)

The Pitt: goliath prostrate by falteringstar - Robby/Dennis Whitaker, explicit. “Please don’t tell me the first person who ever touched your dick was Dr. Robby.” omfg, Dennis, you absolute boss. This was not a thing I knew I needed but I loved it. The author made this seem natural and like something they would both be fully on board with. Santos was amazing. Kind of black humour and depression and enlightenment and awakenings and so worth a read.

The Gilded Age: like nothing else in the world by dollsome - Bertha Russell/George Russell, gen. George and Bertha go to visit Gladys in England. This little fic is a pearl of perfection. Best ending I've read in years.
